Tessa fingered the piece of red origami paper in her hands. The instructions clearly said, “Do not Fold”, but she couldn’t understand how she could get to the end product without folding anything. She scratched her head and flipped the paper over once more. Besty looked over her shoulder and asked, “What’s with that puzzled look?” Tessa frowned and said, “I can’t figure out the next step.”
Besty rested her chin on her palm, and her elbow on the table. “Maybe it’s a code. You know, like a secret code.”
Tessa replied, “No, I don’t. How can three simple words be a code? That would make things too complicated.”
Besty grabbed a piece of white paper and a ballpoint pen. She began scribbling furiously on it. “Ever heard of anagrams? The instructions is telling you something.” She flipped the paper over to the other side and wrote in large block letters: ‘FOND TO DOT.’ “See?”
“I still don’t,” Tessa said. “Fond to dot. That doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Besty shook her friend. “Come on, think of your favourite eat out.”
Tessa shook her head once more and arched her eyebrows. “Eat out?” She looked down at the origami paper and fingered it once more. Then, she pointed in the air. A moment of epiphany has struck her. “Fondue Dot!”
At the same time, both girls shrieked in excitement and began scrutinising the instructions once more. Betsy pointed at the last instruction on the paper. “See, this has 12 steps. I suppose it means 12pm at Fondue Dot.”
Tessa smiled. “Ah. Interesting. But who am I supposed to meet?”
Besty held up the instructions paper. “The guy who gave you this paper. It’s Valentine’s Day, remember?”
“Oh!” Tessa grabbed her bag and threw on her coat. “It’s 11.40 already! I’m going to be late! See you later!”
Besty waved goodbye. As soon as Tessa was out of the office door, she laughed. Silly girl, she would do anything for Eric. And he would do everything for her. They’re meant for each other.
Crystal clear characters, to the point I wondered if Betsy had helped Eric make the valentine…enjoyed, Robin
Haha, I love what you did with this. The brilliant absurdity of origami paper you can’t fold.
Ah, lovely. Well-timed piece!
